BIO: Donetta Hines earned her Ph.D. from the Department of Romance Studies at Cornell University. She has extensive experience in research and academic writing, and specializes in close reading and highly-focused individual feedback. Donetta is particularly skilled at helping writers more effectively structure and organize their ideas in order to more compellingly and convincingly express themselves to their target audiences in the academic and research genres of abstracts, literature reviews, theses, dissertations, conference presentations, journal submissions, and grant applications. Because of this emphasis on structure, audience, and genre, she is able to work with writers from a wide range of academic disciplines.
In addition to working as an academic writing coach, Donetta also conducts workshops, convenes Peer Writing Groups, and teaches academic and research writing courses to graduate and undergraduate students at McGill University. Since Donetta knows what it is like to be ‘stuck’ while attempting to write, she finds it professionally and personally rewarding to help other scholars along their own paths from ‘stuck’ to ‘finished’ and ‘published.’
Although originally grounded in contemporary Latin American literature and film, as well as gender and cultural studies, fields in which she has published and presented widely, her interests now encompass critical theoretical approaches to cultural, visual, economic, and political narratives, in addition to the teaching of academic and research writing. She is bilingual in English and Spanish, and is able to give feedback on academic writing in French.
